Drywall repair

We fix holes, cracks, nail pops and water stains, match the wall texture, and paint the wall so the repair disappears. Patching is half the job. Making it invisible is the other half.

What drywall repair covers

Drywall takes a lot of everyday damage. We fix all of the common problems:

  • Holes. Doorknob holes, holes left by anchors and picture hangers, TV mount and bracket holes, and the cutouts left behind when cable or wiring gets moved.
  • Cracks. Settling cracks running up from the corners of doors and windows, and tape seams that have cracked, bubbled or started to peel.
  • Nail pops. The round bumps that show up in rows along walls and ceilings.
  • Water stains. Brown rings on ceilings and walls from a roof, plumbing or HVAC leak, after the leak is fixed.
  • Texture. Orange peel, knockdown or smooth, matched so the patch doesn’t stand out.

Who it’s for

Homeowners with a few too many holes after moving the TV or the kids’ artwork. People with cracks over the doors that come back every year. Anyone with a ceiling stain from a leak that’s been fixed. Landlords between tenants. And people getting ready to sell, since dents and cracks are the first thing buyers and inspectors notice.

We do drywall repair across the Upstate, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Greer and Taylors.

How we do it

  1. Find the cause. A crack, a pop or a stain usually has a reason. We look for it, and if it’s a leak or a bigger structural problem, we tell you before we patch over it.
  2. Cut out the damage. Loose paper, crumbled gypsum and soft drywall come out so the patch has something solid to bond to.
  3. Patch. Small holes and anchor holes get filled with joint compound. Larger holes get a new piece of drywall, screwed to backing or framing. Nail pops get a drywall screw beside them to pull the board tight.
  4. Tape and mud. Cracks and seams get taped and covered with joint compound in thin coats, each one feathered out wider than the last so there’s no ridge.
  5. Sand smooth. We sand until the patch is flush with the wall, then check it with a light held flat against the wall, which shows every bump.
  6. Match the texture. Orange peel and knockdown get sprayed or applied to match what’s around them. Smooth walls get sanded flat.
  7. Prime. Patches get primed so they don’t soak up paint and show through. Water stains get a stain-blocking primer.
  8. Paint the wall. Usually the whole wall, corner to corner. More on that below.

Why we paint the whole wall

A patch can be perfect and still be easy to see if only the patch gets painted. The paint on your wall has aged, faded a little and picked up some dirt, so fresh paint of the same color doesn’t quite match. The patch also takes paint differently than the old wall, so the sheen looks different, especially in light from a window. That’s called flashing, and it shows up as a dull or shiny square you can spot from across the room.

Painting the wall from corner to corner gives it one even finish. The corners are a natural break, so nobody notices that one wall is a little fresher than the next. If the room is due for paint anyway, our interior painting work can cover the whole room.

Patch or replace a section?

Most damage can be patched. We cut out and replace a section when the drywall is soft or crumbling from water, sagging on a ceiling, or has a hole too large to patch well. Our guide on drywall repair cost and when to patch or replace goes into more detail.

Which paint level fits

The repaired wall gets the same Sherwin-Williams paint as the rest of the job, at one of three levels:

  • Essential (SuperPaint) for rooms that don’t take a beating, rentals, and getting ready to sell.
  • Performance (Duration Home), our most common pick, for hallways, kids’ rooms and living areas. If a wall got damaged once, it’s probably in a busy spot, and this is the paint for busy spots.
  • Showcase (Emerald) for the smoothest finish and the longest life.

What affects the price

Drywall repair is priced by how much damage there is:

  • Minor: nail pops, small holes
  • Moderate: several patches, cracks, a small water stain
  • Major: big holes, long cracks, larger stains

Bigger rooms take more. Painting the repaired walls is priced on top of the repair, and the paint level you pick changes that part. You get a written price before we start. Read more on how we price. Financing is available through Wisetack or Klarna.

FAQ

Drywall repair: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text 864-800-8275.

How is drywall repair priced?

By how much damage there is and how big the room is. Nail pops and small holes are minor. Several patches, cracks or a small water stain are moderate. Big holes, long cracks or larger stains are major. Painting the repaired wall is priced separately. We look at it at the free estimate and give you a written price before we start. See how we price.

Can you fix a hole from a doorknob?

Yes. A doorknob hole is usually too big to just fill, so we cut it clean, put a solid piece of drywall in, tape and mud it, sand it smooth and match the texture. Then we paint the wall. If the door has no stop, it's worth adding one so it doesn't happen again.

Why do cracks keep showing up over my doors and windows?

The corners of door and window openings are where a house moves the most as it settles and as the seasons change, so the drywall cracks there first. We cut out the loose material, tape it and mud it so it's stronger than before. If a crack keeps coming back wide or the door starts sticking, have the framing or foundation looked at before we repair it again.

What causes nail pops and can you fix them?

Nail pops happen when the framing behind the drywall dries and shifts, pushing the nail head out. We drive a drywall screw next to the nail to pull the board tight, set the nail, then mud, sand and paint over both.

Can you fix a water stain on the ceiling?

Yes, once the leak is fixed. Painting over a stain from an active leak just means painting it again. We check that the drywall is dry and firm, seal the stain with a stain-blocking primer so it won't bleed through, then paint. If the drywall is soft or sagging, we cut out that section and replace it.

Can you match my wall texture?

Yes. We match orange peel, knockdown and smooth walls, and we test the texture on the patch before painting so it blends with the wall around it.

Why do you paint the whole wall instead of just the patch?

Touch-up paint on a patch almost never matches the wall around it, even with the same color, because the old paint has aged and the patch takes paint differently. You end up with a shiny or flat square you can see from across the room. Painting corner to corner gives the wall one even finish.

Do you repair drywall without painting the whole room?

Yes. We can repair and paint just the walls that were patched. If the room is due for paint anyway, doing it all at once is usually the better value. Ask at the estimate and we'll price it both ways.
