A town of established houses
Taylors never became a city, but everybody around here knows where it is: the stretch of Greenville County along Wade Hampton Boulevard (US 29) between Greenville and Greer, with the Enoree River running through it and Paris Mountain off to the west. Taylors sits on the same US 29 corridor as our base in Duncan, so it is an easy drive for us.
Most of the houses here went up decades ago, and that shapes the work. There are fewer bare builder walls than in the newer towns and a lot more paint that has already been through a few rounds. Some of it was done well. Some of it was rolled over dirty walls in a weekend, and it shows.
Brick ranches in Edwards Forest and streets like it
Neighborhoods like Edwards Forest are mostly 1960s and early 1970s houses: brick ranches, tri-levels and a few two-story homes on big lots, many updated a room at a time over the years. On houses like these the brick takes care of itself. The exterior painting is everything around it: fascia, soffits, window trim, shutters, porch posts and the front door.
Wood trim on the shady side of a house that age often has soft spots or peeling layers. We scrape, sand and spot prime before a finish coat goes on, and we point out rot that needs a carpenter instead of painting over it. If you are thinking about painting the brick itself, read our guide on painting brick or vinyl siding first. Painted brick stays painted, so it deserves a real conversation.
Inside, these houses tend to have smaller rooms, hallways that show every scuff, and sometimes paneling or wallpaper that was painted over once already. If wallpaper has to come off, we take it down before painting. For the walls themselves, see interior painting.
Around Taylors Mill
The old Southern Bleachery opened in 1924 and closed in 1965. Today it is Taylors Mill, with studios, shops and a brewery, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Along with Main Street nearby, it is about as close as Taylors comes to a downtown.
If your house is one of the older ones in town, expect plaster or early drywall with cracks that return every time they are only painted over. That is a drywall repair job first: open the crack, tape it, set it with joint compound, sand and prime, then paint.
Pebble Creek and the 1980s and 90s houses
Pebble Creek grew up around its golf course, with houses from the early 1970s through the late 1990s and condos along some of the fairways. Pebble Grove next door runs newer, from the late 1990s on. Houses from the 1980s and 90s tend to bring the same three requests:
- Oak kitchen cabinets that feel dated. Cabinet painting is usually the best value, and our guide on painting vs refacing vs replacing lays out the choice.
- Flat builder paint that will not wipe clean. Our Performance level, Sherwin-Williams Duration Home, is the usual fix for halls and kids’ rooms.
- A two-story foyer or vaulted family room nobody wants to tackle from a stepladder. We have the equipment for it.
How a Taylors job is priced
Every job is measured and priced on its own: the size of the rooms or the siding, the prep, and the paint level you pick. Cabinets depend on how many doors and drawer fronts there are. You get a written price before we start, and how we price explains the rest.
Close by, we also work in Greer, Greenville and Travelers Rest.
